Signe (Hill) Mates, 80, of Plainville, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, June 20, 2026. She is now reunited with her beloved son, Trevor “T.J.” Mates, who predeceased her.
Born in Derby on October 16, 1945, Signe built a life defined by strength, determination, and devotion to her family. She eventually made her home in Plainville, where she raised her two children and was known for her tireless work ethic and independent spirit.
For many years, Signe was employed at the former Johnson & Johnson in Southington. Through hard work and dedication, she earned the respect of her colleagues and retired after a long and faithful career. A strong woman in every sense of the word, she faced life’s challenges with resilience and quiet grace.
Outside of work, Signe found her greatest joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved spending time outdoors, tending to her gardens, and relaxing poolside at home. Whether planting flowers or enjoying a sunny afternoon swimming, she cherished the peace and beauty of nature.
Signe leaves behind her daughter, Deirdre Mates. In addition to her husband James, and her son T.J., she was predeceased by her brother and sister.
Her family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to all those who offered kindness and support throughout Signe’s journey. In lieu of flowers, contributions are being accepted to help offset healthcare and final expenses.
Honoring Signe’s wishes, all services will be held privately, and her life will be celebrated by those who knew and loved her in their own special ways. The staff at Plainville Funeral Home extends their gratitude to Signe’s family for their trust. For online expressions of sympathy, please visit http://www.PlainvilleFuneralHome.com
