Richard “Dick” S. Rubino passed away unexpectedly on Friday, May 2. Born April 2, 1941 in Middletown, CT, he was the only child of the late Mario and Mary Oddi Rubino.
Dick was a graduate of Saint Thomas Aquinas High School and went on to graduate from Saint Anselm College. After earning a National Science Foundation Grant, he earned a master's degree in science from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and then a master’s degree in secondary education at the University of Hartford.
As a young boy, Dick had a natural curiosity about science which became a lifelong passion for him, as evidenced by his own career path. As an accomplished research scientist he brought his enthusiasm for science to the classroom of several state vocational technical schools teaching chemistry, physics and related science. Outside of the classroom, he coached high school track & field and cross country.
Transitioning from the classroom to the lab, he took a position as a research chemist at Uniroyal in Naugatuck, CT. He led a team in the development of specialized rubber compounding used in footwear.
Dick also had a strong business acumen which led to a change in career leaving the science lab for the office, becoming the owner and president of Century 21 Mark IV Realty (named after his four children) successfully operating offices in Plainville, Bristol, and Southington CT. He built a long and respected career in real estate, receiving numerous awards and national recognition, and enjoyed mentoring those just starting out in the business. He treated his customers like family and many became lifelong friends. He had a big and friendly spirit which he shared with everyone throughout his day, whether the bank teller or dry cleaner.
Dick loved the beach and fishing, so summer family vacations at Hawk’s Nest Beach were very special to him and his children. An avid Yankees and UCONN fan, he always enjoyed his trips to Yankee stadium with his sons. And we cannot forget his love of Italian food, especially hot peppers.
Dick will be remembered by his children, Mark Rubino (Loren) Westport, CT, Shelley Rubino, Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Paige Rubino Abrams (Steven) West Hartford, CT and The Honorable Richard Rubino (Tara), West Hartford, CT. He cherished his seven grandchildren, Maya, Julia, Ellie, Grace, Cammie, Wyatt, and Luke. Always a teacher, he filled every conversation with them offering a bit of knowledge. He also leaves several nieces and cousins. He was predeceased by his uncle, Anthony Oddi.
For those who are interested, donations in his memory can be made to St. Anselm's College and the American Heart Association
