Richard Eric Zettergren, 66, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2026, after a lengthy illness, while overlooking one of his favorite sights, the beautiful Connecticut shoreline, at Connecticut Hospice in Branford.
Born on April 28, 1960, Richard was one of seven children born to the late Charles "Zeke" and Corrine (Daniels) Zettergren. Raised and educated in Plainville, he developed a lifelong passion for sports at an early age. While attending Plainville High School, Rick excelled in both tennis and football. He went on to attend Nichols College and throughout his life remained an enthusiastic sports fan, rarely missing the opportunity to cheer on his favorite teams from the comfort of his living room.
Rick dedicated much of his professional life to helping others. Through his counseling services and his work with Sound Community Services, he provided guidance, encouragement, and support to countless individuals throughout the New London community.
To know Rick was to know someone who never met a stranger. He seemed to know everyone in New London, and if he didn't know you yet, it wouldn't take long. He had a remarkable ability to strike up a conversation and leave a lasting impression. A gifted storyteller and true sweet talker, Rick's unforgettable personality was matched only by his quick wit and sense of humor.
Outside of work, Rick embraced life with enthusiasm. He enjoyed snowmobiling, was an avid movie buff, and loved discussing films both old and new. Most of all, he found peace and happiness by the water. Whether sitting quietly on the beach, listening to the waves, or simply gazing out at the ocean, Rick felt most at home along the shoreline he loved so dearly.
Rick may be remembered with contributions to The Connecticut Hospice at http://www.hospice.com, in appreciation for the compassion and care shown to Rick during his final journey.
He is survived by his siblings, Chuck, Darlene and Dale Zettergren, Carla (Bill) Bergenty, Carol (Chris) Horvath, and Sara (Ted) Coulombe; fourteen nephews, one niece, and many cousins. He was predeceased by his nephew, Ross Zettergren and his sister-in-law Kirsten Zettergren.
Rick’s family will celebrate his life with private funeral services. The staff at Plainville Funeral Home extends their gratitude to the Zettergren family for their trust. For online expressions of sympathy, please visit http://www.PlainvilleFuneralHome.com
