Norma E. Wayland, 97 of Cheshire, passed away peacefully on Monday February 2, 2026. She is now reunited with her beloved husband of 64 years, William John Wayland.
Elaine, as she was known to family and friends, was born on October 18, 1928 in Irwin, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late James R. and Bessie (Frye) Weaver. Her parents moved to Springfield, MA, where she met her husband, whom she married in 1957, and became a nurse, working at Wesson Memorial Hospital. During Bill’s service to our country in the US Air Force, he and Elaine traveled extensively, living in different states and countries in Europe, all while she remained a dedicated nurse, working mostly as a school nurse wherever they were residing at the time. While stationed in various places, she was active in the military wives club as well.
Following Bill’s discharge from the Air Force, they returned to Springfield for a time, before settling in Southington where they raised their family, and where Elaine was a familiar face at the YMCA. She fulfilled her passion for travel from their military days, never saying no to an organized trip through the YMCA or Calendar House. Her later years were spent at Elim Park in Cheshire, where she quickly made friends with her warm smile and stayed active with daily exercise, swimming, Wii bowling and BINGO games. A loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she lived a life shaped by kindness and steady presence. She will be remembered fondly and missed dearly.
She is survived by two daughters, Robyn Wayland and Michele Younan (Ihab); her son William; her grandsons Jason (Colleen) Geel and Shawn Geel; four great-granddaughters Izabella, Addelyn, Brooklyn, and Elleysn. She was predeceased by her brothers, Jimmy and Jack and her sister Trudy, and leaves many nieces and nephews.
Elaine’s family extends their gratitude to her live-in aid Jean, for her care and devotion for the past two years.
In lieu of flowers, she may be remembered with contributions to the American Cancer Society, 825 Brook St, Rocky Hill, CT 06067 or http://www.cancer.org
