Marie Fort Obituary

Marie Jestina Fort, 76 of Bristol, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family, on Thursday, June 4, 2026. Marie lived her life with compassion, generosity, and a firm belief in helping others, always trusting God to guide her path.

Born in New Britain, Connecticut, on August 10, 1949, Marie was one of seven children to the late Charles and Clara (Hutchinson) Fort. She was raised and educated in New Britain and graduated from New Britain High School, where she formed lifelong friendships and developed the resilient spirit that would define her life.

A longtime and devoted member of St. James Missionary Baptist Church, and later in life at Zion First Baptist Church, Marie's strong faith served as the foundation of her life. Marie was, above all else, a devoted mother and family matriarch. As a single mother raising three children, she dedicated herself wholeheartedly to their well-being, making countless sacrifices to ensure they were loved, supported, and encouraged. Her family was the center of her world, and she extended that same unconditional love to generations of relatives and friends who were fortunate enough to know her.

Her caring nature was reflected in her professional life as well. Marie spent many years working in community organizing, human services, and social work with nonprofit organizations throughout Connecticut, most notably with The Urban League of Greater Hartford. She devoted her career to serving individuals and families in need, uplifting others and leaving a lasting impact on the communities she touched.

Marie had a remarkably creative spirit. A talented artist, she found joy in painting and generously shared her beautiful works with family and friends. She was also an exceptional cook whose meals brought family together around the table, creating memories that will be cherished for years to come.

Those who knew Marie will remember her vibrant personality and unmistakable honesty. She had a wonderful sense of humor and never hesitated to speak her mind. Whether offering advice, sharing a laugh, or telling the truth exactly as she saw it, Marie was authentic and unapologetically herself.

Although she supported many worthy causes throughout her life, her greatest investment was always her family. She gave of herself without expecting anything in return, putting the needs of others before her own and leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, generosity, and faith.

She is survived by her children, Denise, Arthur and Anthony Pyburn; her grandchildren, Ryan, Bryani, Leeyana, Eowyn, Ehren, Sophie, Karlie and Toby; her great-grandchildren Dexter and Azyla; her sister, Gloria Fort and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings, Kenneth, Charles, Jr., Lee, Vincent and Karen.
