Lawrence J. Amara, 77, of Bristol, formerly of Plainville, passed away on Tuesday, November 29, 2022, following a brief, hard fought battle with cancer.
Born in New Britain on July 25, 1945, he was one of two sons to the late Joseph and Rose (Santacroce) Amara. Raised and educated in Plainville, Larry, as he was known to many, was a longtime educator, having served 23 of his 35 years as Principal for the Plymouth/Terryville School system. He married his childhood sweetheart, Laura (Arcari) and settled in Bristol where they raised three loving and successful children and nine grandchildren, all to whom he was entirely devoted. A man of many talents, including carpentry, construction and mechanics, he was a lifelong car enthusiast who spent many days in his garage restoring antique vehicles, attending car shows, inspecting homes, or, in true Larry fashion, simply lending a hand and sharing his knowledge, expertise, smile and sense of humor with those around him. Humble and kind, he lived a life of selflessness and love, and will be missed beyond words by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
In addition to his wife of 53 years, Laura, he leaves his sons, Peter Amara (Marisa), and David Amara (Diana Mejia); his daughter, Alexandra Kiniry (Patrick); his nine grandchildren, Dominic, Griffin, Ava, Francesca, Quincy, Cami, Amelia, Mason, and Anthony; his former daughter-in-law, Sheri Amara; his brother, Frank Amara (Margaret); and his brother-in-law, Tom Arcari (Margaret); along with many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends that he considered family.
In lieu of flowers, Larry may be remembered with contributions to the educational support for the vascular team under Dr. Gifford that took such great care of him; Division of Vascular Surgery, c/o Henry Low Heart Center, Hartford Hospital Department of Philanthropy, 80 Seymour St, Hartford, CT 06102.
Family and friends may gather on Monday, from 5-8 p.m. at Plainville Funeral Home, 81 Broad St, Plainville. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Gregory the Great Parish, 235 Maltby St, Bristol.
