John Bergenty, Sr. Obituary

John A. Bergenty, Sr., 90, well-known and deeply loved longtime resident of Plainville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 11, 2024 at the Jefferson House in Newington surrounded by the love of his cherished family. John was the high school sweetheart and devoted husband of 69 years to Audrey (McLellan) Bergenty and a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Together, John and Audrey built a beautiful life for their family, rejoicing in love, laughter and many memorable life adventures.

John was born on February 17, 1934 in New Britain, CT son to the late William and Helen (Pelczar) Bergenty. Raised in Plainville, John attended local schools and graduated from Plainville High School where he excelled on the Blue Devils Football team and made many lifelong friendships with his peers and teammates. It was in high school that John met the love of his life, Audrey, and shortly after graduation they were married and set to spend the rest of their lives together in total bliss. Family was the center of John’s world and he relished in the time he spent with his loved ones proudly carrying on family traditions, notably the Annual Bergenty Cappelletti Folding, where all gathered to master the recipe of the notorious Christmas family meal.

John was the proud owner and operator of John A. Bergenty Concrete Construction, a business where he not only found success but also shared his passion for manual labor with others. Through his work, he touched the lives of many young adults, taking them under his wing and teaching them invaluable skills, instilling in them the importance of hard work and dedication. His concrete business became a hallmark of trust and craftsmanship in Plainville.

Throughout his life, John found joy in the simple pleasures but loved to remain active and busy. Sharing a passion for travel with his wife, Audrey, they often immersed themselves in the excitement of the Saratoga Races and embarking on annual trips to Florida. These adventures formed cherished memories that will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew John.

John's adventurous spirit led him to spend countless hours hunting in the beauty of nature, especially in Nova Scotia. Whether tracking deer, pheasant, or rabbit, John's passion for hunting provided sustenance and joy for his family, with the bounty becoming delicious dinners enjoyed together. His faithful hunting dog was always by his side, a loyal companion on their outdoor excursions.

John's passion for sports knew no bounds; he was a dedicated fan of high school basketball games, Knights of Columbus softball games, and professional level sports of all sorts. His passion for sports extended to his role as a former coach for the Giants team of the Plainville Midget Football league. His infectious energy and love for the games brought joy to all around him. He was known for his unwavering dedication to NASCAR, spending countless hours at the Plainville stadium in his younger years, cheering on his favorite drivers and later enjoying the thrill of racing events through his son and grandchildren who carried on the legacy of the auto racing in the Bergenty family. His enthusiasm for the sport was infectious, and he shared many memorable moments with his family as they watched and participated in races together.

John exemplified kindness and imparted valuable lessons to his family, who continue to hold these teachings close to heart as they remember him. Through his actions and words, John demonstrated that family bonds are the most significant and enduring treasures in life. His kind heart and willingness to help others endeared him to all who knew him. His legacy of love and wisdom will live on through those he touched.

In addition to his beloved wife of 69 years, Audrey (McLellan) Bergenty, John is survived by his loving children, John Bergenty and his wife, Elise, Laura Sycz and her husband, Kenny, Darlene Benson and her husband, Kurt, Robert Bergenty, and Darren Bergenty and his longtime companion, Carrie; his adored grandchildren, Brianne Pugliese and her husband, Vinny, Victoria Bergenty and her fiancé, Carl Griswold, Kyle Ferguson, Jillian Ferguson and her husband, Jeremy Szechenyi, Zachary Ferguson and his wife, Taylor, Jordan Benson and his wife, Nikka, Aaron Benson and his fiance, Izabella Sadowski, Robert Bergenty and his wife, Elizabeth, Lindsay Bergenty and her husband, Matthew, Evan Guimond and his wife, Lindsey, Tyler Guimond and his fiance, Ashlei Roux, Meghan Guimond, Ryan Bergenty and his wife, Ashley, Kara Bergenty, and Coryn Ebert and her husband, Jordan; his cherished 17 great-grandchildren; his sister, Joyce Hayes; his son-in-law, Kelly Guimond; and many extended family members and friends. He was predeceased by his daughter, Nancy Guimond and his brothers, William and Robert Bergenty.
