James Alfred Gallagher, 87, left this earth on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, with his family by his side. James (Jimmy) Gallagher was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. Jimmy was known for his kind and fun-loving nature as well as his willingness to always lend a helping hand to others.
Born on August 26,1937, he was one of five children to the late Thomas and Mabel (Ptolomey) Gallagher. Jim was predeceased by his brother Robert Gallagher, sister Jean Tompkins, and infant sister Ann Gallagher. Jim had a passion for playing sports and was named Captain of the Plainville High School (PHS) basketball team despite his short stature.
Upon Graduation from PHS in 1956, Jim enlisted in the US Army where he was stationed in Germany. After serving in the Army Jim married the love of his life, Judith (Nesser) with whom he shared 62 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they raised three children. Jim graduated from Moody’s School of Business and worked as an insurance auditor until retirement. He was a self-taught auto mechanic. He was a favorite of the neighborhood kids due to his lighthearted demeanor and quick wit.
After retirement Jim became affectionately known as Poppy to his grandchildren who were the light of his life. His legacy of kindness, humor, and love will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
In addition to his wife, Judy, he leaves his children, Timothy Gallagher (wife Georgianne) of Marion, CT, Mary Gallagher (husband Rick Solomon) of Plainville, CT, Helen Parzych (husband Gregory) of Sudbury, MA; and his grandchildren, Ericka and Thomas Solomon, Sean Gallagher and (step granddaughter) Melissa Parzych.
