Ian Akins Obituary

Our talented and beautiful soul Ian James Akins, passed away on March 10, 2024 in Hartford, Connecticut. Though a life that seems not long enough to those who adore him, it was full of family and close friends that loved him unconditionally and he loved them back hard.

Ian was born on February 5, 1985 to Lee and Lauren Akins. He was raised in Plainville, CT with his parents and sister. Ian was a character from day one. Whether he was in his Hulk Hogan robe or Ghostbusters uniform, he was always making people laugh. He was unbelievably talented at everything he tried, from Kenpo Karate, to gymnastics, basketball, snowboarding, skateboarding and Cross Country. Ian graduated from Plainville High School in 2003.

As Ian grew, so did his faith. He was a proud Catholic and has attended many churches in Connecticut, North and South Carolina. Later in life he became a Knight of Columbus and loved going swimming, painting and going to fairs with his niece Monroe.

Even though Ian’s first love for instruments was the drums, he could also be heard on bass guitar, banjo, mandolin and piano. He found his true love when he picked up a guitar and started singing and writing songs. You could hear him playing on guitar Happy Birthday songs at family parties, his original music, Grateful Dead, various Folk & Bluegrass covers outside around a fire, and hosting open mics. He even played for a Connecticut news station, at Strange Creek festival, Non profit events and The Blue Ridge music center with his devoted Dad Lee. His favorite person to jam with was his father and his biggest fans were his sister Kelly and especially his late Mother .

Ian’s mother Lauren passed away recently and she loved her little boy like you wouldn’t believe. His late grandparents Edward and Rose Waryas, Major James Akins, Harriet and Cecil McCormick loved him so much as well. He leaves behind in this world his loving father Lee Akins, his sister Kelly Zang, brother in law Jerry Zang, niece River Monroe, sister Janet Vidal, brother in law Chris Vidal, nieces Carolina & Halina, his kitty Midnight, aunts, uncles, cousins, and close family & friends. We will remember the good times over the years and miss Ian every step of the way down the road…
