Gene Woolverton Obituary

Gene Fulton Woolverton age 96, of Winter Haven FL, formerly of Plainville CT, passed away on June 16, 2025 in Lakeland FL. 

Born in Mt. Enterprise TX on December 6, 1928 he was one of ten children to the late Horace B. and Ada Florence (Vaughn) Woolverton. He graduated Laneville High School and attended Henderson Business College as well as barber college.  Gene married Jean (Jeanne) Ohrnstedt on December 29,1955 and moved to Texas for two years returning to Plainville where they settled for the next 62 years and raised a family.  Gene worked as a Payroll Accountant at Rourke-Eno Paper Company in Hartford CT retiring after 34 years of service.  He then worked part time for the Bailey Funeral Home in Plainville CT. Gene was proud of his military service during the Korean War, having served with the U.S. Army Fourth Armored Div.  317th Tank Battalion as a radio operator and communications chief.  Gene and Jean were active members of the Plainville Choral Society and members of the Liberty Baptist Church.  Gene was an avid golfer and a member of several golf leagues in both Plainville and Winter Haven.  In retirement he enjoyed puttering around the house and barn and spending winters in Florda. He moved permanently to Florida in 2020.

Gene is preceded by his wife of 63 years Jean, brothers Bill, Mack, and JD Woolverton sisters Evalyn Scruggs, Lottie Johnson, Clara Smart, JoAnn McKay, and Dehlia Parsons.

He is survived by a son, Scott and wife Patti (Korona) Woolverton of Bristol CT; his daughter Rebecca Hyde of Lakeland FL; grandsons Justin Woolverton of Pensacola, FL , Garrett Bocon and wife Kendall of Orlando, FL; granddaughter Cara Bocon, DVM, of Lincoln, NB.  He leaves his companion Jane Rand, together they enjoyed driving around on Jazzy (their golf cart), watching the birds, and stopping at every yard sale. They also enjoyed dining out and attending the activities at Hammondell Campground. Also surviving are his brother Buford and wife Margie of Oak Flat TX.  Gene and Buford enjoyed reminiscing about the old days remembering family events and their military service.  He also leaves many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Gene may be remembered with contributions to Holleman Cemetery in care of Odis Chapman 1369 CR 490 West, Mt Enterprise TX 75681.

Family and Friends may gather on Saturday, September 13, 2025 from 10 to 11 am at Graceway Church, 12 Granger La. Plainville.  A celebration of Gene’s life will be held at 11 a.m., followed by military honors.  Per Gene’s wishes please dress casual for a picnic luncheon following the services.

Burial services will be held at Holleman Cemetery, CR 3158 D at CR315, Oak Flat, TX on Saturday, November 15, 2025.  Family and friends will meet at 11 am for graveside services.  Following the services there will be a gathering at Smyrna Baptist Church, FM 2496, Oak Flat.  At a later date a memorial service will be held in Winter Haven FL.  For online expressions of sympathy, please visit http://www.PlainvilleFuneralHome.com
