Ellen Rivers Stagis, 92, of Bradenton, Florida, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2023, surrounded by family. Born Ellen Marie Rivers on May 29, 1931, in New Britain, CT, she lived most of her life in Plainville, CT, 23 years in Bradenton, and summered in Plainville with family.
She was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Church in Plainville, as well as St. Joseph Church in Bradenton. Upon graduating from Plainville High School in 1949, it was her turn to help support her family. After a marriage of 17 years, she supported her own children by working at Plainville Electro Plating, managing an office close to home, to remain near her children.
In every stage of life, her choices reflected her focus on service, and caring for others, whether family, friends, or strangers. Her family will fondly remember her annual Christmas Eve parties.
She is survived by her brother-in-law Rocco (Ric) Ferrara; Four children & their spouses/former spouse, Robert & Carol (Cookie)(Paradis/Parsons) Stagis of Bristol; Kathy (Cleveland) Stagis of Clinton; Patricia & William Pitkin of Plainville; Sc ott & Cathy (Martini) Stagis of Venice, FL; and Leigh & Mark Pelletier of Nashua, NH; Eight grandchildren: Kim, Elizabeth, Joseph, Jennifer, Michael, Sean, Brian, and Aaron; Eight great-grandchildren, Caleb, Eli, Tristan, Dylan, Aria, Cayden, Ella, and Castor. In addition, the grandchildren and great-children of of her close friends, some of whom called her “Auntie,” including Diana & Jonathan; Evan & Ethan; Patrick & Colleen; Linnea; Suzanne & Alexander; Justin and Charlotte; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her parents, Almetus (Metus) and Grace (Geetersloh) Rivers; Ten siblings & their spouses, Grace (Mae); Frances & Frank Coppi, Thomas & Shirley (& Mona) Rivers; Shirley and Raymond Caya; Dorothy (Betty) Rivers (Sister Grace Francis); Richard and Evelyn Rivers; James and Frances (Frankie) Rivers; Metus Jr. and Alice Rivers; Mary Rose Ferrara; and Margaret and Jerry Provencher; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, June 24, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Plainville, CT. At 9:15, the doors at the back parking lot entrance will be open for family & friends to gather, and share their love for our Mom with each other. In Mom’s memory, donations may be made to the Plainville Athletic Backers Club, PO Box 664, Plainville, CT 06062, to support all student athletes at Plainville High School, due to her special love of Girls Basketball.
