Charles Stepney Obituary

Charles R. Stepney, 96, longtime resident of Plainville, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love and support of his family on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 at the Hospital of Central CT New Britain General Campus. He was the beloved husband for 46 years of Olga (Gerardi) Stepney.

Charles was born the youngest of 8 children on August 21, 1927 in Waterbury, CT son to the late William Henry Stepney Sr. and Maude (Carle) Stepney. Following graduation in 1945 from Warren High School in Rhode Island, Charles proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II, demonstrating his unwavering dedication and service to America. Throughout his military career, he gallantly served in various locations, including Alaska and within the United States. A devoted and patriotic American, Charles had profound love for his country and was proud to be an American, holding a longtime membership with his local American Legion.

He dedicated 42 years to the spring manufacturing industry, showcasing his unwavering dedication and commitment to his craft. Throughout his career, Charles held various positions working for different companies, leaving a lasting impact on all those he encountered. His expertise and passion for his work were evident to all who knew him, making him a respected and admired figure in his field.

Throughout his years, Charles dedicated his time and energy to the Plainville Senior Center, where his presence brightened the days of everyone he encountered. His passion for playing bridge alongside his friends every Wednesday was truly a testament to his vibrant spirit and love for social connection. Whether engaged in a game of set back or simply sharing his infectious laughter, Charles made each moment memorable for those around him.

In his free time, Charles participated in the sport of golf and enjoyed travelling with his wife, Olga, whether it was exploring the East Coast or venturing down South. In addition, he found solace in watching Westerns. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and UCONN basketball.

Charles is survived by his wife, Olga Stepney; his children, Russell Stepney, Mark Stepney, Michael Zavorski, and Doreen (Zavorski) Baldwin; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved granddog, Sophie. Charles was predeceased by his first wife, Mae (Costel) Stepney, and his siblings, Mildred Minion and her husband, Harold, William Stepney Jr. and his wife, Lillian, Doris Webster and her husband, James, Harold Stepney and his wife, Hazel, Gertrude Fallon and her husband, George, Claire Hollis and her husband, Ebon, and Robert Stepney and his wife, June.

Charles family would like to extend their appreciation and heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Apple Rehab, especially his former caretaker, Jackie, who always provided unwavering compassion and exceptional care to Charles.

Family and friends are welcome to gather on Monday, July 22, 2024 from 10 AM to 12 PM at the Plainville Funeral Home, 81 Broad Street, Plainville. Services in celebration of Charles’ life will begin at 12 PM. Charles will be laid to rest with full military honors on Thursday, July 25 at 11 AM at Saint Joseph Cemetery, Plainville.
