Al Herring, 57, of Plainville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 4, 2026, following a lengthy, courageous battle with cancer. His final moments were spent surrounded by the love of his family.
Al was born in Syracuse, New York on March 30, 1969, son to Marcia (Hallock) and Allen Herring. Al had a natural talent for working with his hands and took great pride in building, fixing, and creating. He was always in the middle of a project, rarely sitting still, and took satisfaction in a job well done. His dedication to his craft was evident throughout his many years as a driver groundman with IBEW Local 42, where he earned the respect of his colleagues through hard work and reliability.
Al was a man who found joy in life’s simple and meaningful moments. He loved spending time with his family above all else, cherishing every conversation, gathering, and memory made together. Whether he was catching up with friends or sharing stories and laughter, he had a way of making everyone feel welcome and valued.
An avid outdoorsman, Al enjoyed camping and hiking, finding peace and happiness in nature. He especially loved taking his beloved dog, Luna, for walks—moments that brought him both comfort and joy.
He was a proud and loving grandfather who would do anything his granddaughters asked of him. Their happiness meant the world to him, and he never missed an opportunity to show his love and support.
Known for his sense of humor, Al was always telling jokes and bringing laughter to those around him. His warmth, kindness, and ability to find humor even in difficult times will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and hard work that will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
Al is survived by his wife of 35 years, Jennifer (Griffin) Herring, of Plainville; his daughter, Nicole Lavoie and her husband, Josh, of Plainville; his son, AJ Herring, of Plainville; his granddaughters, Riley Lavoie and Imani Madore, of Plainville; his parents, Allen and Marcia Herring; his father-in-law, Edward Chevrette; his sister, Lorri Jimenez; his nieces and nephews, Rebecca, Anna, George and Marc; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Honoring Al’s wishes, his family will celebrate his life privately. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Al may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741 (www.cancer.org).
