Lena (Morante) Gawrys

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our Mother Lena Morante Gawrys on Sunday, November 10, 2019.

Lena was born in Plainville, in the house that her father built on Shuttle Meadow Rd, on August 31, 1923 to the late Rocco and Domenica (Daddario) Morante.

She graduated from Plainville High School in 1941 and upon graduation went to work at General Electric known to many then as Trumbull’s. She loved to reminisce about the wonderful friendships, summer vacations and having her picture taken with Ronald Reagan when he visited the local company.

However, the highlight of her employment was meeting Stanley “Gaga” Gawrys. As a great softball pitcher for Trumbull’s, he caught her eye and they shared 49 years of marriage together.

Lena was also employed for many years, at Marion’s Lingerie Shop in Plainville owned by her neighbor and good friend Marion Piotrowski.

She leaves behind to mourn her passing her daughters Chrissy Gawrys and Kathryn Kershaw and her son- in- law David, who was like a son to her.

She was predeceased by her sister and brother- in- law Frank and Clara Camp and her brother and sister-in-law, Julius “Doc” and Anne Morante.

She also leaves special nephews and nieces, Dr. Francis and Nora Camp, Charles Morante, Kathie and Paul Lickwar, Joanne Thibault and Karen Camp as well as many great-nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends; her wonderful caregiver Lori Korngiebel and her nurse, Joan Walsh.

Lena also leaves a special cousin, Rosemary Morante who spent countless hours with her over the years as well as Milt and Pat Kershaw who always brought a smile to her face.

We want to thank Dr. James St. Pierre, his wife Tarra and their daughters for the phenomenal care and compassion they have given to our Mother, and to the nurses and staff at the Jerome Home for their excellent care.
