John Egri, Sr. Obituary

John J. Egri, Sr., 92, of Plainville, beloved husband of Kathryn, passed away on Wednesday, December 11, 2019.

Born in New Britain on February 21, 1927, he was the sixth born of seven children to the late Andrew J. and Anna M. (Kohutka) Egri.  Raised in New Britain and later, Granby, John attended local schools, and enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 18.  He served his country in Japan during W.W. II, and was honorably discharged in 1947.  John married the love of his life, Kathryn, in 1953, and settled in Plainville where they raised their four children and were dedicated communicants of Our Lady of Mercy Church.  John was a tool and die maker for many years, working for Union Manufacturing and New England Aircraft, from where he retired.  Upon retirement, he went to work for Dattco as both a school and city bus driver.  John and his family travelled extensively, taking road trips throughout all of North America and Canada, visiting 49 states by car.  While anxiously awaiting a bridge to Hawaii, they took a cruise there in honor of their 51st wedding anniversary.  Known as “The Rock Man from CT”, he collected rocks from every state, visited the post office in most capital cities, always with his rolled up map in hand. He was also a lifelong NY Yankees fan, a loving husband, devoted father and Pop Pop, he will be remembered for his love of music and adventurous spirit, he created priceless memories for his family that will forever be cherished.

In addition to his wife, Kathyrn, he leaves his son, John J. Egri, Jr. and his wife, Rose Marie of Bristol, his daughters, Joyce D. Wollenberg of Plainville and Sharon A. Egri and his “pretend son-in-law” Paul Boutote of Plainville; his grandchildren, Katrina Radil, Todd Wollenberg, Glenn and Jacy Wollenberg, and Sean Wollenberg and Briana Cedergren; and 4 great-grandchildren.  He also leaves his sister, Johanna Egri Terlesky and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his son, Andrew W. Egri and his 5 siblings.

In lieu of flowers, John’s may be remembered with contributions to Our Lady of Mercy Church, 19 S. Canal St, Plainville, CT 06062. 

Funeral services in celebration of John’s life will be held on Thursday, December 19, 2019, at 9 a.m. from Plainville Funeral Home, 81 Broad St, Plainville, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Church.  Committal services with military honors will follow at St. Mary Cemetery, New Britain.  Family and friends may gather on Wednesday evening, from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
